Graduate Student Fellowships

Fellowships Application Information

  1. Your application must be complete at the time of submission (i.e., ALL materials, including letters, must be submitted by the specified deadline).
  2. For all term-time fellowship applications, we are asking for a single PDF of your application materials.
  3. For Dissertation Completion and Graduate Society Summer Fellowship applications, all of your materials will now be submitted directly to GSAS through CARAT. For all DCF applications, please submit a separate PDF of your two draft chapters only to the department by TBD. (See details below.)
  4. All PDFs (and electronic letter submissions) should be sent to the department via germanic@fas.harvard.edu.
  5. Letters should be submitted to the department by the recommenders as scanned, signed email attachments or, barring that, in sealed, signed envelopes.
  6. Please be sure to give your recommenders plenty of time to prepare the letters before the deadline.
  7. When applying for internal Harvard fellowships, students do not need to submit an official transcript from the Registrar’s Office. Instead, they may submit a copy of their grade report available online from the Registrar’s Office. To access your grade report, go to my.harvard.edu and sign in using your ID and PIN. Click on “Campus Resources”. Under “FAS Academics”, click on “Online Student Record.” Note: G1 students may submit their grade reports when they become available, which might be after the fellowship deadline. When submitting after the application deadline, do so directly to the GSAS Fellowships Office, Smith Campus Center 350 (rather than to the department).
  8. GSAS is now using a centralized electronic application for dissertation completion and summer fellowships (but not for tuition waivers or term-time fellowships).

The Director of Fellowships provides counseling to candidates on all aspects of the application process and especially on preparing the fellowship proposal. For this service, candidates should call 617-495-1814 and ask for an appointment with Cynthia Verba. Samples of winning fellowship applications are available in the Fellowship Director’s office and in the GSAS publication, Scholarly Pursuits , which graduate students may obtain at that office. Note: Graduate fellowship workshops will be announced in the GSAS Bulletin and on department bulletin boards. Keep an eye on these for further details. A more complete description of services of the Fellowships Office also appears on the GSAS Fellowships website.
