This graduate class will introduce you to key ideas in historical linguistics, as well as helping you to develop a reading knowledge of Old High German and of related Germanic Languages. We will work closely with a range of texts from an Old High German heroic lay, the ‘Hildebrandslied’, to Beowulf and texts in Old Norse. We will also study passages from translations of Boethius’s Consolation of Philosophy into Old English and Old High German. The course presupposes a good reading knowledge of modern German.
