The GSAS Student Center Music Fellows and the GSAS German Language Table (lovingly known as Die Harvard-CSULB Tafelrunde) at Harvard, and the German Studies Student Association at California State University, Long Beach are pleased to invite you to an online video screening of selected performances of musical works by the German-Czech composer Erwin Schulhoff (1894–1942). The performances that we will hear were recorded at the Colburn School in Los Angeles as part of the Ziering-Conlon Initiative for Recovered Voices, which encourages greater awareness and more frequent performances of music by composers whose lives and musical careers were disrupted during the years of the Nazi regime in Europe. As a Jewish composer, Schulhoff belonged to a generation of Jewish artists in Europe whose works were suppressed and labeled as “degenerate” by the Nazi government in Germany. The video recordings that we will watch were made in 2021 and serve as part of a larger ongoing initiative to musically address the moral, historical, and artistic injustices inflicted by the Nazi regime.

As an introduction to our concert screening, three people involved in the initiative will join us live on Zoom: Maestro James Conlon (Music Director of the Los Angeles Opera, Artistic Advisor of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and Artistic Director of the Ziering-Conlon Initiative for Recovered Voices), Adam Millstein (A.D. in Violin Performance at the Colburn School), and Rebecca Stewart (PhD student in Germanic Languages & Literatures at Harvard). Our guests will share some information about their curatorial, performance, and research work with the Recovered Voices Initiative, including a brief discussion of the composer Erwin Schulhoff and the musical works that we will hear on April 22nd.
