Myth, Magic, and Memory in Early Scandinavian Narrative Culture book coverWith a dual appointment in Germanic Languages and Literatures, where he has taught courses in Scandinavian studies since 1980 and in the Committee on Degrees in Folklore & Mythology, which he chairs, Professor Stephen Mitchell is an internationally-acclaimed authority on Nordic culture and literature and on issues in folklore, centering on popular traditions, mythology, and legends in the late medieval and early modern periods.

It should have come as no surprise (though it did, to him) that colleagues from Harvard and beyond conspired to publish a volume in honor of his work. Entitled Myth, Magic, and Memory in Early Scandinavian Narrative Culture, the recent publication “draws together contributions from across a variety of disciplines to offer new insights into the importance of myth, magic, and memory in pre-modern Scandinavia.” Full details, including a table of contents, are available on the publisher’s website.
