Poetry is a powerful tool for expressing and exploring the human experience. But what is it
about poetry that allows it to connect with us so deeply? What can we learn about the
workings of the brain, the mind, and the nature of human experience through the study of
poetry? In this class, we will delve into the science and art of poetic expression, reception,
and interpretation, drawing on insights from literary and cultural studies, neuroscience,
philosophy, linguistics, and psychology. We will explore the ways in which poetry engages
our senses, imagination, cognition, and behavior. We will also examine the cultural and
historical contexts of poetry, from ancient oral traditions to contemporary slam poetry
