This course introduces participants to the languges of medieval Scandinavia, focusing on the West Norse dialects of Iceland and Norway, with additional attention to the East Norse vernaculars of Sweden and Denmark, as well as the use of runes. The early part of the semester emphasizes grammar and vocabulary; after the midterm, students examine theories and texts connected with performance in the Old Norse world (e.g., Egill’s charm against King Eirikr Blood-Ax and Queen Gunnhildr; the wedding at Reykjahólar).
