September 20, 2019

The Jarl Gallén Prize in North European Middle Age Studies will be bestowed on Professor Stephen Mitchell in the Great Hall of the Finnish Literature Society at University of Helsinki on November 5, 2019. Professor Kaarle Hämeri, Chancellor of the University of Helsinki, will present the prize to Professor Mitchell in recognition of his "important and inspirational research on the mediaeval period in Northern Europe.” Prof. Mitchell will deliver a lecture entitled “Magic and Memory in the Medieval North”, which will be followed by a seminar with four speakers on subjects pertinent to his research.

The prize, which is conferred every three years upon a prominent medieval scholar for excellence in research on Northern Europe in any relevant discipline, was established in 2003 by the Thure Gallén Foundation in memory of medieval scholar and historian Jarl Gallén (1908 - 1990). Professor Mitchell is the first North American scholar to receive this honor. Prior recipients are Sverre Bagge (University of Bergen, Norway), Monika Hedlund (Uppsala University, Sweden), Anders Andrén (Stockholm University, Sweden), Lars Boje Mortensen (University of Southern Denmark), and Lena Liepe (University of Oslo, Norway).
